Hilton Falls Conservation Area

Matty enjoying his first ride in the "pack"! A co-worker of mine gave it to us and we thought we'd try it out this weekend at Hilton Falls Conservation Area. Chad thought it was a nice change from carrying Matthew on the trails and Matty had a blast!
Smith family at the falls...the falls were dry...but it was still a nice hike!

Uncle Paul and Aunt Lauren finally came with us to a park!
Happy to be on board with his Dad! Matthew has been a big time Daddy's boy lately!

Crawford Lake Conservation Area

Today we went to our third Ontario Conservation Area - Crawford Lake. It was amazing how many people were there. Here we are at a 15th century Iroquoian Village at the park that has been reconstructed on its original site - pretty cool.

There was a raised boardwalk trail that went all around the lake.

How Cute Is My Boy???

Come on people, really, how cute can one boy get?! Dad and Matty always have such a fun time in the bathtub - Matty loves to play and splash. This picture really shows off the fact that Matthew has Chad's chin - very masculine and square :-)

Belfountain Conservation Area

Since we have travelled to many of the local provincial parks, I have now set my sights on the conservation areas. There are many within an hour radius and most do not require extensive travelling on the 401 - whoohoo! Today we went to Belfountain in Brampton.
Matty looking very serious...but oh, so handsome!

Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area

After the Terry Fox Run we drove out to Rattlesnake Point - and no, there are no rattlesnakes there...It has lots of trails, beautiful views, campsites, and is a rock climbing site. When we were there, there must have been 20-30 climbers - I guess it is a popular spot. We had a great time and it's only 30 min from home and does not involve driving through bad traffic - so I think we found a winner!

Matty and Dad goofing off on the trail.
Part of the view, plus you can see the climbing ropes anchored on the trees...it's pretty much straight down from there!
One of the five look-out spots at Rattlesnake Point - the view reminded us of the Valley.
Snack break!
Cuddle break!

And you thought only birds and small mammals lived in trees...
Matty giggling in the tree - he loves touching leaves and trees
On the way home from Rattlesnake Point we made a quick stop at Springridge Farm to pick up some homemade apple crisp...I hope it's delicious!

Terry Fox Run

Chad, Matthew and I drove to Milton this morning to participate in the Terry Fox Run. Though we would have loved to have been running in Bedford with the Strum gang, we had a great time. There was live music, free lunch, and a community atmosphere. Chad, of course, ran all 10 km - while Matty and I ran/walked about 3.3 km. After the run, Matty and I had a picnic lunch which he really enjoyed!
The Smith family post-run. I have one of the certificates and the stickers for this year and last so that Matthew will have his own Terry Fox Run certificate on his wall. We plan to continue running in it every year :-)

Play Ball!

The pick up...
The wind up...

And the throw! Matthew's two favorite playtime activities are throwing the ball (he will chase it himself and throw it again) and reading stories. Riley seems to know he is not supposed to chase Matty's balls....at least not yet...I'm sure they'll both have a "ball" when Matthew is old enough to play fetch with Riley :-)

Chudleigh's Apple Farm - A Taste of the Valley :-)

Getting ready to go to Chudleigh's Apple Farm in Milton. We had a very nice visit - they have a hay maze, an animal area, apple picking, a play area...lots of fun stuff, especially for young kids. You can also buy apples, jellies, and pies. It's only about 20 minutes from the house, so we'll have to be back!
Giddy-up!
Mom and Matty getting ready to enter the Hay Maze...Matty is not looking too excited...

He perked right up though - Matthew loves looking at trees...for some reason they are very funny

Matty and Dad having some mac-n-cheese for a snack...mmmm...good!

He loves it when the animals come up close :-)

Walking back into the house holding onto to Dad real tight!

Darlington Provincial Park

Yesterday the Smith's went to Darlington Provincial Park, which is about an hour away, near Oshawa. I have now visited 7 of Ontario's Provincial Parks! This one was also really nice. It has some hiking trails, fields, access to water, and great group picnicing sites for family gatherings. We hiked one of the trails and walked around the park for a couple of hours. Here are the boys taking a break on the viewing platform.

Mom and Matty on the beach - unfortunately (but understandably) there are no dogs allowed on the beach - Riley would have loved to have gone swimming.

Snack break!

Surviving the First Week

Well, the day had to come that mat leave would be over, I'd have to go back to work, and Matty would have to go to daycare. It is amazing how fast that year went by! I'd been excited and anxious about going back to work, and dreading not spending all day with Matthew all at the same time - but all in all we had a great first week :-) I expect the weeks from now on will pretty much be a blurr. Chad and I wake up at 5:40, get Matty up at 6:10 and leave the house by 6:40 so I can catch the Go Train at the brand new location. Chad then takes Matty to daycare and heads to work.

I take the train all the way downtown and then transfer onto the subway which drops me off about 1 min from the office - about 1 hr 15 min door to door. Walking into Union Station in the morning is unreal - there are so many people everywhere, walking in a million different directions.

For those of you who may not have heard, I recently accepted a contract position for one year with the Ministry of Environment in the Environmental Assessment and Approvals Branch. The office is pretty much at the corner of St. Clair and Young, and I am on the 14th floor. Everyone seems really nice and all have been very welcoming. My first week was pretty low key and was mostly orientation, but I expect to get into a couple of files this coming week.

Matthew has been doing terrific at daycare. Very few morning tears and then he settles in to playing. Teddy is a constant companion, but they say he is interacting with the other kids and is a very happy boy. He is sleeping well and his journal says he has an "extremely healthy appetite" - he even sometimes has seconds for lunch! Chad did have to pick him up early on Friday b/c he had a low grade fever, but his temperment was good and there was no fever the next day...just a bit of a runny nose. I guess that is to be expected...

The evenings are short lived...it's close to 6pm by the time I get home - we eat, bath Matthew and put him to bed, pack our lunches and head to bed ourselves. It's quite a change from the past 6 months, but so far we've managed to get into a nice routine :-)

Hmmm, lasagna isn't so messy Mom...
Think again! Messiest meal to date :-)

Gananoque

On Thursday we made the journey to Gananoque - the gateway to the Thousand Islands (in the St. Lawrence) as part of my quest to visit all the National Parks. We rented a cottage for a couple of nights and had a great time. Chad went fishing and caught a bass, but sadly no pike - we walked along the 1000 Island Parkway (above) - we visited Heart Island (pics below), and Lauren and I went to "Anne and Gilbert" at the Thousand Islands Playhouse :-)
Riley having his first swim in Ontario - life is good

Getting ready to boat to Heart Island where Bolt Castle is - to do this we will have to navigate through the thousand islands and into US waters without getting lost.

Castle construction was started at the turn of the 1900s, but after George Bolt's wife died suddenly in 1904 he immediately stopped construction and never returned to the island - very sad. The island is actually in New York - so this was our first trip to NY :-)

Words you never want to hear from your navigator while you are motor boating through 1000 Islands..."Hey guys, Heart Island isn't marked on the map"...so Paul, how have you been directing our adventure? Paul - "Well, Chad pointed in this general area..." Have no fear, we found Heart Island and made it there in about an hour.
We're here!!
My little bundle...slept in my arms most of the very bumpy boat ride to Heart Island...my arms are really sore today - no joke!

Our new home...I think we like it :-)
Paul and Lauren in the ballroom
Matthew just hanging out in the picnic area after his snack.Paul: " Ah...so that was buoy 226...yeah, we're &^%$"! We were just a tad off course to get back to the cottage - good thing we realized it when we did! Thankfully we got back on the right path and made it safely back with Matthew sleeping through most of the journey :-)
